① 煩悩を滅却した状態のこと。原語「ニルヴァーナ」の「吹き消された」という意味から。その意味に、さらに、輪廻転生の環（世界）から解脱した状態（彼岸）、および、智慧により真理を獲得した状態（さとりを得た状態）の意味が付け加わり、仏教独特の観念が形成された。つまり、通常、涅槃と言うときにはこれらの意味の複合した概念を指す。→涅槃寂静。② 「釈迦牟尼の死」を意味する語。入寂、入滅。（高僧に対しても用いられることがある。）
