1. 中国発祥の表意文字(表語文字とする学説もある)の一種。また、その造字法に従って日本や朝鮮で作られた文字を含めていう。漢字は中国の周辺国に伝わり、現在でも日本語や朝鮮語の表記の一部に使われる。日本語においては、漢字の読み方は音読み(呉音・漢音・宋音・唐音・慣用音)と訓読みに分かれる。日本で作られたものは国字という。
