① 琉球地方（鹿児島県奄美群島および、大東諸島を除く沖縄県）で話される言語。日本語とは共通の祖語から分岐したものであり、文法・語彙体系ともに現在の日本語と強い相関性があるため、独立した言語ではなく、日本語の方言のひとつとする考え方もあり、その場合、琉球方言や沖縄方言と称される。一方、琉球地方でも地域による言語差が大きいため、それぞれ地域ごとに独立した言語とする考え方もあり、その場合、琉球地方各地の言語の総称として琉球語派や琉球諸語と称される。
