① 〔哲学用語〕学問研究の方法に関する論理的反省をいう。現代の哲学は、ほぼ例外なく、一定程度、方法論（殊に哲学の方法自体を対象とする）の側面を有する。② 方法についての批判的もしくは体系的な論考・論述。たとえば、教育（学校教育）に関しての「教育方法学」、経営管理に関しての「経営工学」など。③ 方法、手法、または技術のこと。準日常語として、用語の意味について無自覚的、無反省的にこの語が用いられることが多く、その場合の意味は「方法」に同じ、また、ときに「技術」（適用される一定範囲の技術。技法）に同じ。（誤用といってよいこの現象（用法）は学術書などにおいても散見される。）
