① 日没の際に、西方の地平線に近い空が赤く染まって、燃えるような色を呈すること。太陽高度の低下により日光の大気への入射角が小さくなった結果、大気の層を通過する距離の伸びた日光が大気中の微細な塵や水滴により回折され、波長の長い赤色系の光のみが地上に届くために起こる現象。晩霞。夏の季語。
